Victor “Mutant” Shevtsov (November 19, 2014)

“As to music phenomena and developments in Russia, I would mark out three important periods which I more or less witnessed and saw at first hand. The first period includes the ‘70s and the ‘80s. During this period, our country – the Soviet Union at the time – lived in strict separation from other countries of the world. However, many diverse, unusual and very interesting records managed, in one way or another, to penetrate into the country, and they were not only pop-music but avant-garde and art-rock records as well – and I, a schoolboy then, was among people who used to listen to those records. Their availability gave rise to first bands and, I think, generally resulted in the accumulation of a kind of creative energy which gave birth to Soviet musicians capable of presenting – not only inside the country, but at the international level as well – their own view of what was going on in the field of modern electronic and experimental music. If you ask me about the ways of promoting such music in Russia today – well, generally the answer is: we have only the Internet, and nothing more. However, right at the moment I am here, at the headquarters of Nostress Netlabel, and I would like to say that this cooperation is very important for us, as it gives us the opportunity to present our projects to people not only in Russia and not only through Russian Internet-resources, and I would like to express deep gratitude towards Nostress for such an opportunity and all the work they are doing.”
